I have been taking Joe's classes for years. I love his classes and the community that have been created around it. He is an asset to the community, and he is the driving force behind many of the drumming performances in Santa Cruz events. Joe’s class is a first-class romp through the many faces of African/Brazilian percussion. His class is exceptionally organized with clear goals delineated before each class, while also promoting a fun, no-pressure atmosphere worth its weight in gold. Pay attention, though, as you may miss an enlightening story about his vast experience in teaching, the history behind many of the rhythms you’ll play, or minute nuances of proper stick-holding, designed to technically ground the beginner through advanced drummer; his attention to detail is noteworthy. As I write today, I strongly believe I am a better drummer because of Joe, and I will continue to take his class as long as it is readily available. As I often tell him, “You’re the best bargain in Santa Cruz,” as you’ll be hard-pressed to find the kind of hands-on teaching you’ll receive for the price he charges, anywhere.
