San Diego Scottish Highland Games in Vista is an annual event for over 45 years. Itโ€™s a fun event for the entire family, young and old. We left our vehicle at the Vista High School and got into a designated school bus which shuttled us into the Brengle Terrace Park about a mile away. The annual event was nicely situated on the park grounds. Kilts, kilts everywhere!! There were over 50 vendors of Celtic, Scottish and British goods; beer garden; single malt of whiskey tasting, bagpipe, drum and band competitions; female and male athletes competing in the heavy Highland Games (they liked to toss things); Highland dancing and competitions, sheepdogs herding in sheepdog trials and live band to entertain. Long, slow lines to get meat pies and Celtic Tea and snacks. We spent a few hours at the event cruising the vendors, purchased goods, watched the athletes tossing the cabers, listened to the awesome bands playing music while we ate our meat pies and shepherd pies and watched the Highland dancing and bagpipe competitions. We especially enjoyed the sheepdog herding activity. A great event to have fun and to learn more about the Scottish culture.

Brought 6 kids ages 1-10 and they all had a great time. Bring water only one filing station found. If not extremely early you'll have to park on the street and walk quite a ways. A lot of grass so wagon or jogging stroller suggested. Not much scottish music unless you go to the bagpipes. No pets allowed because of working dogs and sheep. Kids area with volunteers for games. Two live band areas, vendors, woman and men competitions, sheep trials, dancing was apparently in a building somewhere so we completely missed it. No signage and the flyer could have used a better scheduled map. Vendors are expensive and only a few food places so long lines and long cooking times. Porta Johns throughout.

I have always enjoyed coming to the Highland Games because it is something all ages and abilities can enjoy. From my 73-year-old father to all the families I see at the event, all attendees find a way to have fun. We love watching the sheep herding, the falconry displays, the heavy athletics (men and women) and we enjoyed the whiskey tasting event where you learn about the variations of whiskey from all around Scotland! There is also plenty of space to walk around, you aren't crowded, and it is a great chance to be immersed in another culture. The venue being a park makes things that much better. You can be outdoors, with space enough to find your own place to recharge before exploring the next event - I also appreciate that you can bring in your own food, drink, blankets, and chairs! There is also ample parking (at only $5) and a shuttle to help those who may have trouble with mobility. The entrance pricing is fair for all the events and activities you gain access to attend, at no additional cost. All the add-on activities are fairly priced in addition to paying the entrance fee. I look forward to attending every year!

I love Scottish culture and weโ€™re so lucky to have this in our corner of the world, even if itโ€™s just for the weekend. I look forward to it every summer. I recommend either getting there when it opens or considering public transportation near the venue because of parking.
