I wanted to share my great experience with AK Family Taekwondo. I’ve always seen the staff working hard to make sure the kids have a great time and learn important values.

As a mom and someone who has worked part-time at the facility, I’ve seen how the program really focuses on teaching kids discipline, respect, and responsibility. Even though my own kids haven’t joined the program, I’ve seen the positive changes in other kids who have.

They are amazing with the kids! Endlessly kind and patient. My son is AuDHD, so it can be hard for him to do group classes. They excel at knowing his limitations and working to the best of his abilities. It’s honestly everything I could hope for in that regard. He loves going, it’s one of the highlights of his week. Do your kids attend the AK Family Taekwondo summer program?

If so, are you aware of how they “supervise” your child when they are away from their facility and out of your care?

According to their website they have a “field trip every day.” This is very concerning to me after what I witnessed yesterday. I was at Pyrah’s Strawberry Festival and was shocked to see so many children running around with zero supervision, all wearing the same shirt. Their website states that their summer program provides “complete character development” However, these children were from one end of the farm to the other, being rude to attendees & staff, and constantly cutting in front of other children waiting in line.

When an adult was finally located, she willingly admitted that they had only 9 “supervisors”. These supervisors were not following the children around in small groups. No, instead they were placed at stations around that farm. She listed these supervisors off, and some of them were not even adults themselves! One in particular was sitting down, looking at the ground. He was not engaging or even watching the kids in his vicinity.

She also stated she had 70 kids in her care that day! To which I inquired if she knew where every single kid was. She didn’t have an answer for that, except to say that they were on the farm. This farm is over 200 acres, in bear country. This doesn’t even address concerns about those who prey on events and circumstances like this!

She stated that these kinds of field trips are new to them, and admitted that they are trying to figure out how they should be done. We are half-way through the second month of this summer. If they truly do have a “field trip every day”, how new could this be to them? Not to mention, they taking all of these children to a pool once a week!

I could find nowhere on their website where it stated whether or not AK Family Taekwondo has a Child Care License from the Department of Health or the Municipality of Anchorage. Seeing as they are a Taekwondo facility with a summer camp, I would imagine the answer is no. If I am correct, then they would be considered to be operating illegally in the state of Alaska. This should be a major concern to any parent whose child attends this program.

As a mother, I felt that I needed to inform parents of exactly what is going on at these events. The children are scattered all over and the “supervisors” are not keeping track of them in any consistent manner. No one is monitoring their behavior or where they are going. Some of these children seemed to be as young as 5 or 6! This situation is a disaster waiting to happen and dangerous to the children in the care of AK Family Taekwondo’s summer program.

I love the toddler classes that are offered here. My toddler loves the class and learns so much every week. The teachers/ helpers are interactive with the students and make the class super fun for them.
